SSS foils jailbreak attempt

Another attempt by detained members of Nigeria’s terrorist group, the Boko Haram was foiled Yesterday at the headquarters of Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Security in Abuja.

“There was an attempted jail break by our inmates when the suspect handler went to feed them,” said spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar.

Ogar did not provide details on the number of inmates involved nor disclose why they were being held but said an official statement would be issued later.

The DSS headquarters in the capital Abuja is located near the presidential villa and nearby residents reported hearing gunfire on Sunday morning. Traffic was also diverted in the area.

A security source said the incident happened when inmates disarmed one of the guards, hitting him with their handcuffs before seizing his rifle and shooting him.

Emefiele Confirmed As New CBN Governor

Godwin Emefiele

The formal Zenith Bank MD has been  confirmed as the new CBN governor to replace Lamido Sanusi yesterday. This was televised live and was done before the lawmakes.

After the long Sanusi versus Jonathan's saga, Zenith bank boss Godwin Emefelie has been confirmed as the new CBN governor by the senate. 


 Senate President David Mark said 

 “Emefiele will ensure the prerequisite responsibilities of the Central Bank governor without fear or favour.”

Godwin Emefelie will be replacing Sanusi who was suspended by President Goodluck Jonathan on February 20, days after he had accused the state oil company of embezzling $20 billion (14.5 billion euros) of public funds.
Sanusi had been respected among international economists and was applauded for  repairing our crumbling and  corrupt banking sector and stabilizing the currency. 

Some of the argument amongst many Nigerians are that his(Sanusi) suspension is a politically ploy by our leaders on him for trying to expose the corruption in the country.

Gas explosion in Garki, Abuja

 

An explosion rocks Shagari Plaza on Thursday Evening at about 5.15pm along Moshood Abiola Way, Garki -Area.

 

Many expressed fear that it was a bomb explosion, a jeep parked close to the gas dispenser went in flames.

the gas retailer , who tried to recover his cash kept under one of the cylinders, was also caught in the explosion while trying to save his earnings for the day.

 people confirmed that he just take the delivery of those gas cylinders  on Wednesday and that they are still surprised as they don't know what could have happened to the cylinders to cause the explosion.

The gas retailer was said to be receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

FRSC’s new plates number is illegal

A Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday March, 26th held that it was unconstitutional for the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, to impose new number plates on motorists in the country.

The judge, Justice James Tsoho, delivered the judgment following a suit by a lawyer, Emmanuel Ofoegbu, challenging the powers of FRSC to issue the new number plates.

Ofoegbu had challenged the power of the commission to impound vehicles of motorists who failed to acquire the new numbers.

Tsho held that it was unlawful for the respondent to impose the new number plates on motorists, where there was no existing law permitting same.

He said: “The issue of redesigning new number plates by the respondent is not covered under the provisions of any law in Nigeria.

“The respondent cannot force Nigerians to acquire new number plates by impounding cars, without the backing of any legislation to that effect.

“I hold that the act of the respondent amounts to an arbitrary use of power, and is therefore illegal and unconstitutional.

“Judgment is, therefore, entered in favour of the plaintiff, and all the reliefs sought are hereby granted, I so hold.”

The plaintiff had filed the suit on September 30, 2013 through a Human Rights Activists, Mr Ogedi Ogu.

The plaintiff had sought a declaration that the threat by the respondents to impound vehicles of motorists, who failed to acquire the new number plates was invalid and unconstitutional.

In his statement of facts, the plaintiff averred that the old plate numbers were issued under the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations, NRTR, 2004.

He averred that the NRTR 2004, is a subsidiary legislation made under the FRSC Act, Laws of the Federation as revised in 2004.

Ofoegbu averred that there was no law made in accordance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which prohibits the use of the old plate numbers, or declares its use as an offence.

He also averred that the threat by the respondent to impound vehicles and arrest motorists who failed to comply with the October 1 deadline, was a gross violation of the provisions of 36 (12) of the constitution  which guarantees the rights of individuals.

He had, therefore, urged the court to declare as unlawful, the threat by the respondent, to arrest motorists using the old number plates because there is no law validly made in accordance with the constitution prohibiting its user.

The applicant had also sought an order of injunction restraining the defendants from impounding vehicles or otherwise arresting or harassing motorists who failed to acquire the new number plate.

Despite the emphatic victory, Mourinho reiterated his belief that Manchester City, who trail Chelsea by six points with three matches in hand, remain title favourites.

"Man City has everything in their hands," he said before City’s 5-0 victory over Fulham. "Liverpool is one point behind us [if they win their match in hand] but they also have everything in their hands.

"Nobody plays Champions League from the top four, only [Chelsea and] Manchester United. They [City, Liverpool and Arsenal] have just the Premier League matches to play and we have at least two big Champions League matches to play in between."

The only blow for Chelsea on Saturday was a hamstring injury to Eto'o that saw the forward replaced soon after his goal.

"In his experience, he thinks it is not big because he was feeling it and before the big tear he could stop and say 'enough'," Mourinho said.

Champions league: United qualifies for quarter-finals

Manchester united are sweating on the fitness of RVP after their  comeback to knock out Olympiakos out of the competition...Robin Van Persie scored a hat-trick as United defeat Olympiakos to reach the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The win gave United a 3-2 aggregate win and also gave the Manager David Moyes a relief off pressure.

Recruitment Stampede Victims gets automatic slots

President Jonathan said all the deceased families gets three automatic employment  slots in the immigration  and those injured get employment in the Service.

He also added that the exercise has been cancelled and a fresh test  will by handled under the  Chairmanship,Special Service Civil Commission. The Federal Executive Council sent their condolences to the families and those who sustained injures and express total regret of that these tragedy happened at all.

 The President said these through the Minister for Information Laban Maku.

Fire out break in lagos

Fire outbreak involving a Petroleum Tanker  and PHCN pole. One Person was trapped  and wounded during the incident.

An Eye witness said the Petroleum tanker wanted to make a turn to enter the filling station when the vehicles on queue did not allow it gain access into the filling station in the process an iron punctured the tank which way to the fuel to pour out and subsequently caught fire, the tanker was loaded with 33,000 litres of Petrol.

It was stated two cars, two buses and one other Jeep were burnt down completely during the incident.

NEMA information Officer, MR Ibrahim Farinloye said that the PHCN pole fell on the person because to the fire which affected the pole.

President Goodluck Jonathan  issued a query to the Minister of Interior Comrade Abba Moro to explain within 24 hours the poor handing of the immigration recruitment exercise. 

The interior Minister,Abba Moro and Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service Davis Parradang were summoned to the presidential villa by President GoodLuck Jonathan, The Interior Minister who dressed in a white Caftan, appeared disturbed after emerging from the President's office in company of the Immigration boss. 

Source at the villa said President Jonathan was worried by Saturday's incidence had queried the Interior minister to explain the poor handing exercise as witnessed across the country.

Comrade Abba Moro declared yesterday that he will not resign his appointment saying such move will amount to running away from the problem.

He Made the declaration just as he stated that the Federal government would soon inaugurate a panel of eminent Nigerians and stakeholders to probe the tragedy to ensure that the nation does not experience such deaths in the future.

The lecturers of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State staged a protest over the irregular payment on their salaries in the past three years, on Monday 17th March and they agreed to stay away from lecture room indefinitely.

The protesters showed their grievances to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Saburi Adesanya  of the Institution through a letter and urged him to directly forward their message to Governor Ibikunle Amusun.
The Chairman of the OOU branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Dr.Deji Agboola  accused Ogun State government for the irregular payment. He also appeal to the Governor, Governor Amosun to put lectures salaries in the first line charge of expenditure, just like other civil  and public servants in the State. He further buttress the fact that the irregular payment of lecturers salaries denied them to meet their financial obligations. He added that:

         'we are tired of working for months and receiving only one month salary. our members have affirmed that they have been deprived the opportunity to come to work as salaries are not paid'

Dr. Agboola also alleged that lecturers of OOU had in the past three years been subjected to arbitrary taxation by the State government, which led to confusions in the volume of taxes being paid by them.

The lecturers further fated the use of the Point of Sales System for the collection of fees in the institution, describing it as exploitation and negating the whit paper issued by the Visitation Panel to the institution set up by the current administration.

Chris Brown to stay in jail

Orange is the new Brown wardrobe. Chris Brown's lawyer was unable to persuade a Los Angeles judge to let the singer out of jail on Monday.

Brown, 24, wore an orange jail jumpsuit at court, with his mother sitting behind him, while attorney Mark Geragos argued the singer should be allowed to enter another rehab program instead of spending the next month in jail.

The singer was locked up on a probation violation warrant Friday after he was booted from a court-ordered drug rehab program.

Assistant District Attorney Mary Murray said Brown has already been ejected from two rehab programs in the last five months and another program should not be considered.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge James Brandlin said he was concerned about a "provocative" statement counselors said Brown wrote on a card at the Malibu rehab center. "I am good at using guns and knives," according to a document read in court.

The rehab program told Brown to leave because of that statement and two other rules violations, the document said. Brown refused a drug test -- which his lawyer denied -- and he touched elbows with a female patient, according to the document.

Brown's next chance to get out of jail comes on April 23 when Brandlin considers if his arrest on a misdemeanor assault charge in Washington justifies keeping him locked up. There is a possibility the judge will speed up that decision so Brown can travel to D.C. for a trial on that charge.

Brown's legal troubles began five years ago, when he beat Rihanna as the two sat in a rented Lamborghini on a Hollywood street. He pleaded guilty to felony assault in June 2009, which resulted in a sentence of five years of probation and 1,400 hours of community labor.

The judge has revoked Brown's probation twice in the past year, most recently because of his arrest on a sidewalk near the White House after he allegedly punched a man.

Brown voluntarily entered a rehab program a day after being released from a Washington jail in October, but he was kicked out a few days later for "throwing a rock through his mother's car window" after a family session at the center, a probation report said. Brown was upset because his mother said she wanted him to stay in treatment, the report said.

"Mr. Brown proceeded to walk outside and pick up a rock and threw it through his mother's car window and it shattered," according to a letter from the rehab center included in the probation report. 

West's controversial moment

West is paying a price for not ignoring a swarm of paparazzi surrounding him at an airport this past summer.

A no contest plea is treated the same as a guilty plea for purposes of the sentencing Judge Alan Rubin sentenced west to serve two years probation for the misconduct batter conviction. He must attend 24 anger management session, perform 250 hours of community service and pay restitution to victim. The Judge said he will review the community service to make sure west is getting no preferential treatment.

Insurgents attack military barracks

Boko Harm Islamist attacked a military base in the northeast Nigeria (Maiduguri) on Friday 14th March 2014 and freed dozens of insurgents.

Witness Said before the attacked the Giwa barracks, they opened fire in a residential Neighborhood  which started after 7.00 (0600.GMT) Gunmen hurled explosives into the compound setting several buildings ablaze.

Another witness said the gunmen entered Maiduguri after crossing a river on the fringes of the city, then passed through the residential neighbourhood of Fauri.

The insurgents forced their way into the barracks prison and freed several prisoners(Member).
The Defense Spokesmen( Major General. Chris Olukoade) said the insurgents have been hit hard by military  bombardment in recent weeks and Boko Haram attacked the barracks to boost their depleted stock of fighters. Olukolade said the Islamist staged the attack in response to series of military operations launched across the northeast in recent days and these have destroyed their camps, killing  many insurgents.

Job seekers met death in Abuja

Unemployment is a particular challenge, with an estimate 37.5 percent of under 25s out of work, according to national Bureau of Statistics.

This morning (15th March 2014) at the National stadium Abuja, the Federal Government recruitment drive for job seekers in the immigration department, thousands of youths who are seeking for job, at least seven person met death as stampede claim their life, leaving other injured.

Pipeline explosion in Lagos.

The scarcity of PMS has beginning to bring the criminal act of pipeline vandalism which from the story heard, there was an pipeline explosion in Ijegun- Lagos. From the story this evening (15th March) people are moving with Jerry cans towards that area, before the explosion. The Lagos state fire service was there on time but are handicap cos they couldn't cross to the explosion point as there was no conveyor to cross the side.
